Gokarna is still, at its centre, a working pilgrimage town built around the Mahabaleshwar Temple, and that's a useful thing to remember given how much of its recent reputation is built on the beach-hopping trail south of town — Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise beaches, connected by a rocky coastal footpath rather than a road.
Each beach has a genuinely different character: Om Beach is the most developed with shacks and stays, Paradise and Half Moon are quieter and reachable only on foot or by boat, and the walking trail between them, while not difficult, does involve some scrambling over headland rocks in a couple of stretches.
Highlights
- Mahabaleshwar Temple in the old town
- Coastal walking trail linking Kudle, Om, Half Moon and Paradise beaches
- Sunset at Om Beach, shaped like the Om symbol from above
- Quieter, less developed Paradise Beach, boat or foot access only
Good to know
- The coastal trail between beaches has a couple of steep rocky scrambles — wear proper shoes, not flip-flops
- Beach shacks are cash-friendly first, card second — carry enough cash for a full day out
- Paradise Beach has no proper shade or reliable food stalls — carry water if you're heading there for the day
