Nandi Hills

Chikkaballapur District, Karnataka

Time needed
Half day
Distance
60 km away
Entry
₹30 per person, plus ₹30 two-wheeler / ₹100 car
Best time
Year-round, arrive before 6am for sunrise

Nandi Hills is the default weekend-sunrise trip for most of Bengaluru, and the gates now open specifically early — around 5:30am — to manage the volume of people who drive up before dawn. Tipu Sultan used it as a summer retreat and the fort walls and his stone residence, Tipu's Drop, still stand near the top.

The road up is well paved and closed to private two-wheelers before 6am on weekends in some seasons, with shuttle buses run instead — check current rules before you go, since they change. Once the mist clears by mid-morning, the view loses most of its drama, so this is genuinely a trip worth losing sleep over.

Highlights

  • Sunrise viewpoint above the cloud line most mornings
  • Tipu's Drop and the remains of his summer fort
  • Amrita Sarovar, a small stepped tank near the top
  • Paragliding operators nearby on non-peak days

Good to know

  • Leave Bengaluru by 4am to reach before sunrise — the drive takes about 90 minutes without traffic
  • Carry a light jacket; it's noticeably colder at the top than in the city
  • Check current vehicle rules before you go — the hill sometimes restricts private vehicles at dawn in favour of shuttles
