Built by the Wadiyars of Mysuru after they bought the site from a British missionary, Bangalore Palace borrows fortified towers and battlements straight from England's Windsor Castle. Unlike Mysuru Palace, this one is still privately held, which shows in both the slightly worn grandeur and the fact that large sections stay roped off.

The audio guide (included in the ticket) is worth using — the family's own commentary on the portrait gallery and durbar hall gives context the plaques don't. The lawns outside regularly host concerts and weddings, so check ahead if you specifically want interior access rather than just the grounds.

Highlights

  • Neo-Gothic towers modelled on Windsor Castle
  • Included audio guide with Wadiyar family commentary
  • Carved wood interiors and the durbar hall
  • Manicured lawns often used for concerts

Good to know

  • Photography inside costs extra and is separately ticketed at the counter — decide before you queue
  • Go on a weekday; weekend event bookings sometimes shut sections of the palace with little notice
  • Parking is inside the gate but fills up fast after 10am — arrive by 9
